Benefit Assistance

Benefit and Assistance Information

Discover all of the benefits available to the unemployed.

Everyone knows that it's hard to make a living in the United States. The most important predictors of future financial stability are typically getting a good education and learning valuable job skills. But even the most prepared individual can get derailed by unexpected circumstances in life.

That's why the United States government has created multiple ways to provide assistance and benefits to those in need. Here are some of the most common assistance programs available to those in need:

Food Assistance

The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) is a federal nutrition program. Known previously as "food stamps," SNAP benefits can help you stretch your food budget if you have a low income. If you’re eligible, you can purchase food using benefits that are issued to you monthly. You can use your SNAP benefits to buy a variety of foods for your household. In addition, there are specific programs available for school meals for children and seniors.

Housing Assistance

People with low income, seniors, and people with disabilities may qualify for help from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) to get affordable rental housing. HUD doesn't own rental property. It gives money to states and building owners, who in turn provide low-income housing opportunities.

Unemployment Assistance

Through the U.S. Department of Labor, there are a variety of benefit and aid programs to help you if you lose your job. These programs can help with unemployment insurance benefits, job training, and finding a job. In addition, if you lose your job, the federal government can help you to continue your health care coverage through COBRA. COBRA is the Consolidated Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act. COBRA lets workers and their families remain in the employee's group health insurance plan for a limited time after a change in eligibility.
